The aim of this course is to increase your skills in publishing about your research work (both writing skills and the process of publication). Furthermore, the course intends to introduce you to other disciplines within the field of environmental and sustainability research outside your own discipline.
After completion of this course you should be able to:
• give an overview of the successive steps in a publication process
• make a difference between a professional and a scientific article
• make a framework for an article
• write an abstract of an article according to the guidelines of a specific journal
• review written contributions of colleagues submitted to a journal
• copy-edit written contributions of colleagues submitted to a journal
• write an article (professional or scientific) according to the guidelines of a specific journal
• use a internet-based open journaling system.

To participate in this course you should meet the following preconditions:
- you are able to read and write in English
- you have your own (preliminary) PhD-research results which are suitable for writing an (preliminary) article
- IMPORTANT: your research supervisor is willing to review two documents that you deliver during the course:
o the framework for your article (represented in 6-8 powerpoint slides) and
o the first complete version of your article.
The aim of this course is to increase your skills in publishing about your research work (both writing skills and the process of publication). The course has a total (net) study load of 100 hours. After completion of this course you should be able to: - give an overview of the successive steps in a publication process - make a difference between a professional and a scientific article - make a framework for an article - write an abstract of an article according to the guidelines of a specific journal - review written contributions of colleagues submitted to a journal - copy-edit written contributions of colleagues submitted to a journal - write an article (professional or scientific) according to the guidelines of a specific journal - use a internet-based open journaling system.

The course structure contains several important phases of an authentic publication process. You will undergo different phases of a ‘real-life’ publication trajectory including writing your own article (or parts of it), reviewing others work, copy-editing others work and finally submitting you own work to a journal. You will receive (anonymous) feedback on your work from colleague students and your research supervisor. Depending on the phase of the publication process you will have a different authentic role (author, reviewer, copy-editor). These roles are similar to roles in the real-life publication process.

Communication on your (intermediate) writing products is handled by a web based (electronic) journal.

The main part of the course consists of tasks you have to carry out. To complete these tasks you can use indicated tools en source-materials.

The course materials (tasks, sources and interaction) are delivered in an electronic environment. This presents the opportunity to attend the course from diverse institutions independent of their location.

The course only has one f-2-f meeting. For PhD-students who are not able to attend this meeting (e.g. because they are staying abroad) an alternative (using internet communication) for this meeting will be offered.

The course is ideal for PhD-students who do not have the opportunity to follow an intensive full-time f-2-f writing / publishing course and want to spread their course activities over a longer period.
Since you will work in an electronic environment, there is no 'real' course location
Others

In 2013 enrolment to this course is limited to Ph.D. students (aio's) of the Research School SENSE (to a maximum of 10 students).


The course fee varies, according to your residential country, your nationality and the previous education completed, between € 284,= and € 341,= (for more information see www.ou.nl/kosten; only available in Dutch).
