In the past weeks, some errors in the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have found wide attention in the media. These errors are unfortunate and require correction, as is common in the scientific process.
However, in view of the management of the SENSE research school and its many affiliated researchers, these errors do not affect the scientific content and overall message of the reports of the IPCC. Climate change requires urgent political action.
We regret that some media outlets have published articles on this matter that contain misleading, incorrect and incomplete information. Moreover, we regret that some articles have questioned the personal integrity of members of our research school who participate - unpaid and on their own time - in the international IPCC network.

The report, compiled in association with scientists around the world, comes with less than 80 days to go to the crucial UN climate convention meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon stated that this report is a final call for action to the world.

In the latest issue of the IVM newsletter director Frans Berkhout gives his view on what will happen after the climate negotiations in Copenhagen in December.
Franks Berkhout states: 'There is no doubt that the COP at Copenhagen has huge political significance and that the consequences of the decisions made (or not made) will reverberate for another decade and more. But we should also not expect too much and remember that Copenhagen is one moment in a long political process.'
So what will happen afterwards? Berkhout makes a few predictions:
1) Long follow-up negotiations
2) Climate policy objectives remain contested
3) Compliance remains a major issue
4) Dealing with the impacts will change climate politics.

NWO has modified the Innovational Research Incentives Scheme. From 2009 onwards there will be a greater focus on knowledge utilisation and there will be more opportunities for multidisciplinary proposals. In each category (Veni, Vidi, Vici) separate committees will be installed for assessing multi-disciplinary interdivisional applications. WOTRO will be responsible for organising the evaluation of these interdivisional proposals. Although this new category is open for all fields of research, it nevertheless opens up new opportunities for development oriented research and for career development in that field. WOTRO therefore encourages you to apply.
Another change is that proposals from different disciplines will compete and will be compared with each other. Furthermore, extra funds will be made available to top researchers, while institutional matching and prior institutional embedding is not required anymore.
