International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) is now accepting applications for our annual postdoctoral program. Each year IIASA selects two post-graduate researchers to receive full funding for a 12-24 month stay at IIASA.

The application deadline is August 15th, 2006.

On April 14, 2005 the SWOME/GaMON Marktdag will take place at the Ministry for Environment in the Hague. This day, titled "Science of policy-making: a good policy for scientists?" is a joint initiative of SWOME and the NWO program GaMON. It is organised in close cooperation with the Ministry of VROM and the Ministry of LNV.

Announcement of Opportunity: START Fellowship/Visiting Scientist Program (Round 13) This program, funded by DGIS, the Netherlands, is designed to increase the number of developing country scientists who serve as active partners in global change research in START regional networks and in the Joint and Core Projects of the Earth System Science Partnership (IGBP, WCRP, IHDP, and DIVERSITAS). Nominations for the thirteenth round can be made until December 1, 2004.

Acht voor Ruimte

Kennisnetwerk voor nationale onderzoeksprogramma's In februari 2003 heeft, onder leiding van de Unie van Waterschappen, het consortium Leven met Water een kennisprojectplan ingediend voor de ICES/KIS-3 Bsik regeling, binnen het thema Water en Ruimte. De titel Leven met Water geeft de essentie weer van de problematiek van Ruimte voor Water en Waarden van Water. Het gaat om anders leven met water met de juiste balans tussen de verschillende ruimte claims.

Opening eerste ronde nieuw STW-programma Valorisation Grant Technologiestichting STW stimuleert en financiert excellent technisch-wetenschappelijk onderzoek in Nederland en bevordert de toepassing van de onderzoeksresultaten door derden. Vanaf 21 september 2004 is de eerste aanvraagronde voor STW Valorisation Grants geopend. De Valorisation Grant is een nieuw STW-programma naar voorbeeld van het Amerikaanse Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) programma. Doel van dit programma is commercialisatie van de verworven kennis uit universitair onderzoek te bevorderen.

CO2-lek verergert door liberalisering wereldhandel

Sinds in Kyoto is afgesproken de CO2-uitstoot zo veel mogelijk te verminderen, bestaat de vrees dat een deel van de energie-intensieve industrie uit de deelnemende landen naar het buitenland zal vertrekken en daardoor de CO2-uitstoot in niet-deelnemende landen zal vergroten. Ir. Onno Kuik (Onno.Kuik@ivm.falw.vu.nl) en Dr. Reyer Gerlagh (Reyer.Gerlagh@ivm.falw.vu.nl) van het Instituut voor Milieuvraagstukken van de VU (IVM) hebben zich gebogen over de vraag of dit zogenaam-de CO2-lek verergert door de liberalisering van de wereldhandel, zoals de wereldhandelsorganisatie die WTO nastreeft via verlaging van de importtarieven en andere handelsbarrières. De buitenlandse concurrentie die zo optreedt, kan de productieprocessen verdrijven naar lage-lonenlanden. Voor de publicatie van hun berekeningen in het artikel ‘Trade liberalization and carbon leakage’ in The Energy Journal (2003) ontvangen zij op 9 juli in Washington (VS) de Best Paper Award 2003.

The Ecological Society of America has awarded their

2004 Sustainability Science Award

to Marten Scheffer, Carl Folke, Steve Carpenter, Jon Foley and Brian Walker. The award recognizes their collaborative research on catastrophic "regime shifts" in ecosystems, which was featured in a Nature review article.

Abstract:

This review of biodiversity-related indicators was undertaken to support the development of a core set of environmental indicators by the European Environment Agency. Among its main conclusions is that a great variety of indicators has been developed to assess aspects of biodiversity at the national, international or global scale, but only a limited number of them are actually in use on a regular basis. The main content of the report is a summary of 655 such indicators.

Op 15 april 2004 is het NWO-MaGW onderzoeksprogramma Vulnerability, Adaptation and Mitigation (VAM) officieel van start gegaan. Het is een nieuw onderzoeksprogramma waarin gezocht wordt naar determinanten, verklaringen en maatschappelijke aspecten van geleidelijke en abrupte klimaatveranderingen.

De Nederlandse overheid is gevraagd experts te nomineren die kunnen bijdragen aan de totstandkoming van het in 2007 te verschijnen 4e klimaatrapport van het Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change van de Verenigde Naties (IPCC). Nominaties kunnen gedaan worden voor de functies van Coordinating Lead Author, Lead Author, Contributing Author, Review Editor en Expert Reviewers. De nominaties moeten voor 10 januari 2004 aan het Nederlandse IPCC-secretariaat worden toegestuurd.
