Bioavailablity – Recent Developments, Research Needs and the role of SENSE

Location
Date
December 3, 2004
Duration
All day
The emergence of bioavailability as a key concept in risk assessment, risk management and treatment of polluted soils & sediments has led to new scientific insights and stimulated research to which SENSE partners have made a significant international contribution. The main goal of this Core 1 workshop is to review the latest developments in research on bioavailability, in particular that of SENSE, and to discuss the implications of these developments for the concept of bioavailability. Current research in SENSE on bioavailability will be presented in the form of a poster session. Following the poster session, important gaps in current knowledge and promising lines of future research for SENSE will be discussed.

The workshop will be held at the Vrije Universiteit,
Room F123, De Boelelaan 1085, 1081 HV, Amsterdam

Preliminary Programme

09:00 – 12:30: Recent insights into bioavailability and the contribution of SENSE

- Molecular insights into the sorption and bioavailability of organic micropollutants – Dr. J.R. Parsons (UvA)
- Molecular insights into the binding and bioavailability of metals – Prof.dr H.P van Leeuwen WUR)
- Recent insights into bioavailability in terrestrial ecosystems – Dr.Ir. C.A.M. van Gestel (VU)
- Recent insights into bioavailability in aquatic ecosystems – Dr. A.A. Koelmans (WUR)
- Recent insights into bioavailability: potential application in environmental policy – Prof. Dr.Ir. A.J. Hendriks (RUN)

12:30-14:30: Lunch and Poster session presenting current SENSE research on bioavailability

14:30-16:00: Discussion on research needs and how SENSE can address these.

The meeting will be of interest to researchers not only in Core 1 but also in Core 2. PhD students, postdocs and staff members working on bioavailability, sorption and related issues are encouraged to present their work in the poster session.
