Journal Club Animal Ecology (VU)

Location
VU University, Amsterdam
Date
April 1, 2010
Duration
3:00 PM to 4:30 PM
End date
May 13, 2010

Each semester the department of Animal Ecology at the VU organises a journal club around a specific theme.

The coming period, the journal club will focus on a book: "Community Ecology, Processes, Models and Applications" (see: http://ukcatalogue.oup.com/product/9780199228980.do).

The book is a follow-up of a PhD course, organized for the SENSE PhD programme. During that course leading researchers in the field of Community Ecology from Europe and the USA gave lectures on recent and often unpublished developments in their areas of expertise. The editors, Peter Morin and Herman Verhoef, were able to convince most lecturers to transform their lectures into book chapters and asked other colleagues to fill in some gaps. The book contains 14 chapters, from topology, dynamics, the importance of spatial and temporal scale and the applications of community ecology to emerging problems in human-dominated ecosystems, including the restoration and reconstruction of viable communities. The final chapter speculates about emerging frontiers of community ecology.

The journal club is open to everyone: staff members, PhD students and MSc students alike. The workload includes reading the book chapters and preparing questions, and a one and a half-hour meeting to discuss the chapter.

There will be 7 meetings, each on Thursday from 15.00-16.30, starting on April 1.

If you want to join this journal club, please send an email to Herman Verhoef (herman.verhoef@falw.vu.nl) as soon as possible, so that the books can be ordered (price:  £32.50 - 40 % discount).
