PCDI Postdoc Retreat - STEM

Date: 28 October 2015 - 30 October 2015

Are you at the crossroads of your career? What comes next? How can you make a difference and take the lead to build your future?!

Course information

3 days away from university, taking time to work on personal development and career goals. The retreat programme offers a combination of:

  • Inspiring seminars by PhD holders about making choices, work-life balance and what really matters to become successful in academia, industry or non-profit
  • A series of training sessions to support you to take charge of your career
  • A forum discussion with opinion leaders in STEM on how not only to work hard, but work smart
  • Networking with PhD graduates no longer working as researchers in academia

Aims

The PCDI Postdoc Retreat supports you to explore the extent of your possibilities after your PhD or postdoc, improve your skills and learn how to make a difference and take the lead to build your future.

By the end of the retreat you will:

  • Have a clearer idea on where you would like to go after your PhD or postdoc, to make the right choice
  • Have discovered new career opportunities for PhD graduates
  • Have more insights on how to increase your chances of success in academia, the industry, non profit or as an entrepreneur
  • Be more aware of your personal capacities and role as a scientist in society
  • Have identified skill gaps and know what to work on
  • Review your priorities and make a personal action plan

Time investment

The PCDI PostdocRetreat is a 3-day course. The format of a retreat has been chosen to support you to reflect maximally on your career and professional development, without being distracted by your daily life and its challenges. Discussions with peers can be as helpful as the programmed parts.

Target group

Early career researchers: postdocs and final year PhD students in Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths (STEM); academic researchers on a fixed term contract who are at crossroads of their career.

As the priorities of PhD students who have just started their graduate work lie in acquiring research skills, we feel that the PCDI Postdoc Retreat programme is less suitable for this group.
