Potsdam Summer School Human Environments in a Changing World

Date: 04 September 2017 - 13 September 2017
Location: Potsdam, Germany

The fourth Potsdam Summer School will explore the relevance and challenges of an approach to inclusive governance for sustainable futures and how sustainable development as in the UN Sustainable development Goals (SDGs) can be achieved. The SDGs, the Paris Agreement and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 constitute a frame for a common understanding of the global interrelations, which need to be integrated in strategies and action plans. To make discussions more tangible we will examine what role the SDGs play in measurement, management and monitoring of progress towards sustainable economic, social and environmental development of cities and communities. The programme will discuss challenges of urban planning, pollution and resilience to climate change and we will focus on risk factors such as resources i.e. energy, water and land use, population growth and climate change. The concept of inclusive governance will serve as a transdisciplinary framework to integrate different kind of knowledge both within and outside science.

The Summer School is geared towards young professionals, post-docs and future decision-makers from research institutes, government agencies, NGOs and the private sector. Applications from around the world are welcome and the Potsdam Summer School will be an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas and initiate future co operations.

An intense ten-day programme will address topics like:

  • What are the challenges of interdisciplinary knowledge-exchange between science, policy makers and society?
  • How can different forms of knowledge and data from social and natural sciences, humanities and the arts be integrated?
  • How can we provide knowledge for action and thus contribute to transdisciplinary inclusive governance?

The application process for the international Summer School is now open until 18th April 2017.

The organisers welcome applications from up-and-coming scholars and young professionals with different backgrounds. The entire Summer School will be conducted in English.
