Discussion meeting Research Cluster XIII "Land use, spatial analysis and modelling / ecosystem and landscape services"
The intention of the meeting is: getting to know each other, having an exchange of ideas, knowledge and experiences, and perhaps discussing future collaboration opportunities.
(i) What are the best features of modelling ES, biodiversity and landscape connectivity? Are they compatible? Is there space for change (technological, conceptual or of application)?
[modelling features: level of analysis, cross-scale dynamic; driving forces; spatial interaction and; temporal dynamic (example for LUCC: Verburg, P.H. et al 2004); landscape connectivity: ecological processes of organism movement in between patches of habitat (TAYLOR et al. 1993), which depend on the interaction that occurs in between landscape patches and links in multiples scales (LINDENMAYER & FISCHER, 2006) (e.g., Anna et al, 2015; Peloroso et al. 2016)]
(ii) What are the opportunities and weaknesses of integrating ecosystem service, biodiversity and landscape connectivity on environmental planning for decision-makers?
[e.g. opportunities: develop of multidisciplinary indicator that can be better integrate to land use and management policy or integrating the environment, social and economic parameters, beyond the scenarios (Albert et al 2016); weaknesses: miss leading the decision makers to simplify the biodiversity as only the ecosystem service (Mace et al , 2012; Peterson et al, 2010) or causing a negative economic incentive over trade off markets (example: the ‘cobra effect’ case of British policy on India or the US Endangered Species Act of the 1973 case)]
