This Summer School is organised by the University of Reims, together with SENSE
The fourth edition of this successful Summer School focuses again on the governance of socio-ecological systems, which is a rapidly emerging issue in sustainability science. This edition specifically aims at bringing together scholars who integrate knowledge on both land and water centered socio-ecological systems, such as coastal zones, river deltas, islands and wetlands. Particular attention will be paid to the processes through which integrated policies are developed, implemented and evaluated. This year the summer school will be organized in Brest, a city on the coast of Bretagne. This will allow for the in situ observation of a socio-ecological system where the land-water continuum is prominent and where local stakeholders are actively engaged in dealing with green-blue continuity, also including scholars from the Institut Universitaire Européen de la Mer (IUEM) and the Institut Français pour la Recherche et l'Exploitation de la Mer (Ifremer). The programme consists of a well-balanced mix of lectures, practical skills workshops, site visits and ends with a symposium dedicated to the topic.
The GOSES Summer School is specifically designed not only for doctoral candidates, but also for pre-docs, post-docs, junior and senior scholars, who wish to further explore the governance of socio-ecological systems, discuss cutting-edge research with peers and established scholars alike and develop specific skills such as presenting and discussing their own research, co-writing scientific articles and modeling socio-ecological systems. The language of instruction will be English.

Up to 10 scholarships to cover tuition, travel, board and accommodation will be available for CNRS staff members and up to 5 extra scholarships will be available for scholars affiliated to CNRS mixed research units (UMR). Moreover, at least 5 spots will be reserved for members of SENSE who confirm participation by 31 May 2017. At least 5 spots will be open to external participants. Inscriptions will be on a first come first serve basis, provided certain minimum requirements are met.
