Master Classes Adaptation Futures 2018

Students and early career researchers and practitioners are encouraged to participate in the conference. In addition, a dedicated MasterClass Day will be held on the Friday following the formal conference.

MasterClasses will give early career researchers and practitioners (i.e. students or those with less than ten years’ experience) from South Africa, Africa and the rest of the world a chance to interact closely with international experts in adaptation. Participants do not necessarily have to attend the conference.

The MasterClasses are a mix of academically-oriented and more practical sessions:


Quality time with a leading academic thinker, for facilitated discussion around key concepts. These may have prescribed reading or other preparatory activities.

  • Transformative Adaptation
  • New approaches to applied research: research to achieve societal outcomes
  • Working the most vulnerable communities on Community Based Adaptation (CBA)
  • Urban adaptation governance


Training or methodology focused, such as ‘how to…’ or the principles of engaged research.

  • Designing and facilitating participatory processes for innovative dialogue
  • Opening up the methodological toolkit on adaptation research
  • How to demonstrate adaptation reasoning to access climate finance
  • Monitoring & Evaluation of climate adaptation projects and portfolios
  • How to communicate climate change and adaptation research in an accessible and engaging way for different audiences
  • International career options and pathways in climate adaptation
