SENSE Summer Symposium 2004

SENSE Summer Symposium 2004 (June 2004),
hosted by the Copernicus Institute

This meeting took place on Thursday 17 June 2004, Gertrudiskapel Utrecht
You are hereby invited to witness a challenging exchange on the many conflicting claims on the countryside. The SENSE Summer Symposium 2004 is hosted and co-organized by the Copernicus Institute.

The MORNING PROGRAMME will focus on the Dutch countryside as a source of resources, nature and biodiversity in relation to other societal functions. Land use in the Netherlands is expected to change dramatically in the coming years. How to handle the conflicts of interest in a changing rural area where the importance of the urban function increases at the cost of agriculture? How important is preservation of the present nature and landscape? How to safeguard natural and cultural values? At which hierarchical level should responsibilities be delegated? How can the perception of diverse landscape aspects be taken into account in a rapidly changing countryside?

Expert scientists will reflect critically on the keynote speakers in short statements.

In the AFTERNOON PROGRAMME, there will be room for your own research presentation in a number of parallel workshops (use the online registration form for your submission)! You are welcome to contact the workshop organisers if you would like to give a presentation in it.

The afternoon programme will be concluded with a pleasant opportunity to continue the discussions informally with snacks and drinks.

Getting there
There is a clear description ("ROUTE BESCHRIJVING") on the site of the Gertrudis church in Dutch at http://utrecht.okkn.nl/. A summary in English:

Public Transport:
From the Utrecht Centraal station hall, follow the signs to 'Godebaldkwartier'. Soon you will find an ABN AMRO bank on your right: go right, pass the HEMA, then find the escalators going down, out of the shopping mall. Outside, you will observe a busy road about 50 metres to your left (Catharijnesingel): cross it and go to the right, along the road. You will walk along a church with two square towers. This is the Ste Gertrudis Chapel with the meeting centre ("ontmoetingscentrum").

By Car
Note that Utrecht has a maze of one-way streets, so when you take a wrong turn, do not expect to get back to the main road easily by taking a few right turns.
When you enter the city, follow the signs that say "Centrum" and "Centraal Station". Find one of the following parking garages:
Parkeergarage V & D
Parkeergarages winkelcentrum Hoog Catharijne
Parkeergarage Rijnkade
Parkeergarage Springweg.
We recommend to print out the local map on http://utrecht.okkn.nl/plaatjes/10b553_510.gif.

In case you have a routeplanner, or want to use an online planner, use this address:  Willemsplantsoen 2, 3511 LA Utrecht.<br-->
