ITSP Summary

For the SENSE certificate 30 ECTS (credits) are required. The table below shows a summary of the categories in which credits are possible and/or required (the separate elements and courses are clarified in more detail further below - details on separate courses may be found in the SENSE Course Guide at: http://www.sense.nl/courses), and the required parts.

Registration for a course should always be done by use of the online registration form in the SENSE Course Guide. In case registration is not possible through the SENSE website, the SENSE Course Guide provides an external link.

Most courses are concluded with an assessment of the PhD student's performance and with an evaluation of the course. Each participant who has completed a course successfully will receive a course certificate or notification, issued by the course coordinator.

After completing your ITSP, you can apply for your SENSE Certificate. To obtain this, please fill the SENSE Certificate application form at least 15 weeks before your PhD defense and send it to the SENSE education coordinator (sense@wur.nl).

Essential elements of your SENSE ITSP

  1. 1. A2 project: please note that you have to contact Dr. Ad van Dommelen for approval of your SENSE A2 Research context activity.

  2. 2. Other research school (ORS) courses: All courses organised by universities and academic organisations like NWO and KNAW are accepted by SENSE to be included in your ITSP. If you consider to do a course organised by another organisation please send an e-mail with (link to) the course announcement to the SENSE Education Desk for approval.

  3. 3. MSc courses: we encourage you to discuss with the course coordinator and your supervisor whether you can follow part of the course for partial credits, to make optimal use of your time.

  4. 4. Writing a proposal: If you are the main author of your PhD proposal you will be awarded 6 ECTS, but only if your proposal has been reviewed by two independent internationally renowned experts in your field of study. The organisation of the review process is the responsibility of your institution. For WIMEK, IVEM, ICIS en RU-ES please submit your PhD research proposal for review to Johan Feenstra within 6 months of starting your PhD. Contribution to the writing of a new research proposal will be awarded according to the time you invested.

  5. 5. Management skills: if you organize an event, you can find collaborators and advertise your activity using the SENSE Research Clusters. Got to http://moodle.sense.nl/ and click on ‘SENSE Research Clusters’ on the right hand side. You post your event in the Cluster's News Forum which will then be e-mailed to all Research Cluster participants. You can also put the event on the Calender of the Research Cluster.

  6. 6. Presentations: Each unique presentation counts for 1 ECTS. In addition, we can also award you ECTS for attending international conferences. You will need to attend at least two SENSE (research cluster) meetings, present your research at least at one and at least perform one presentation at an international conference.

  7. 7. Publications: Only articles published or accepted at the time of your defense will be included on your certificate. We therefore advise to plan for no more than 2 publications at 2 ECTS per publication. If this means that you have less than 30 ECTS planned in total, see point 8.

  8. 8. Keeping track of your ECTS. The ITSP is a plan, and plans change. It is your responsibility to make sure that you have undertaken at least 30 ECTS of activities by the end of your PhD. You might consider undertaking an additional activity such as following a SENSE General Skills course, supervising MSc students (this counts as Didactic Skills training), or presenting at international symposia.
