SENSE Summer Symposium 2002

Current Controversies on Causes and Consequences of Environmental Change

Introduction by Prof.dr. N.M. van Straalen, General Director of SENSE:
"Politics that disregard science and knowledge will not stand the test of time".


This quote from Gro Harlem Brundtland (Science 277, p. 457) illustrates the great responsibility that environmental scientists have with respect to the quality of their work. More than in any other scientific discipline, environmental scientists need to be aware of the use of their findings in environmental policy.

The research school SENSE aims to contribute to the maintenance and continuous improvement of scientific quality among its members by educating young scientists and by organizing discussions among its members.
It is also the responsibility of SENSE to advice national and other authorities with the best available scientific evidence. These aims have guided us in the design of the Annual Symposium 2002, which is held on 19 June (see elsewhere on this web page).

We organize debate in the plenary morning session with a lecture of Dr. B. Lomborg. I am sure that the keynote address from this renowned speaker, who has raised a lot of discussion with his book "The Skeptical Environmentalist", will set the stage for vivid discussions and hot debates in the parallel sessions that follow in the afternoon. Therefore my advice is: don't miss this oppportunity, make a contribution and let's debate!
