Abstract:

Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) is a relatively recent strategy that through conservation, restoration and creation of ecosystem services supports societal adaption to climate change. Such a new approach requires entrepreneurial actors from both the public and private sector. This thesis therefore analyses entrepreneurship in EbA from three conceptual angles:

  1. individuals and their (mutual) strategies, analysed through a systematic comparison of five EbA cases in the Netherlands and the UK
  2. the interactions between the individuals, through an in-depth case study in the Netherlands and
  3. the conditions influencing the individuals and their interactions, through a qualitative comparative analysis of 18 cases in the Netherlands and the UK.

These three complementary approaches give us an overview of the current practices and dynamics related to entrepreneurship in EbA.
