This thesis is entitled “Higher, better, faster!? - Ultra-high field (UHF) Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spatially Resolved Spectroscopy”. We investigated the technical opportunities and challenges of UHF-MRI, namely sensitivity, acquisition time, susceptibility effects (increased image contrast and artefacts), sample preparation and use of dedicated hardware. Furthermore, applications for ultra-high field strengths were investigated, such as biofilms on bioanodes from environmental technology and metabolites for biomedical research questions. The analysis of these applications has shown that biofilms growing on activated carbon bioanodes are less feasible for ultra-high field MRI, but could nevertheless be imaged using high-field MRI. For metabolites, ultra-high field shows advantages which go beyond the increase of the signal-to-noise ratio. Additional applications for environmental science, biomedical applications and plant sciences were investigated and the potential for UHF research for these applications is discussed.
