Abstract:

Sulfur redusction and disproportionation are important conversions in nature, and these have much potential for biotechnological precipitation and recovery of metals from acidic waste streams. In this thesis, two novel acidotolerant sulfur-respiring microorganisms are presented. The metal tolerance and the broad range of temperature and pH for growth of the isolates indicate the feasibility of applying them for biotechnological purposes. Proteogenomic analysis on the isolates helps to the better understand of sulfur metabolism in prokaryotes, regarding the respiration of sulfur and thiosulfate and the disproportionation of elemental sulfur.
