Abstract:

Bioelectrochemical systems are a promising technology that uses microbes to power the recovery of metal by consumption of an electron donor. This thesis aim: to improve the performance of this technology by improving the cell design, the use of new electron donors and the prototyping of an up-scaled version to use it in industrial applications. This thesis demonstrates that: High current densities and low internal resistances are possible to achieve by improving cell design (chapter 2). Hydrogen is a suitable candidate for copper recovery (chapter 3 and 4). Up-scaling is a challenging step (chapter 5). This technology is economically more profitable that state of the art technology of Solvent Extraction/Electro-Winning (chapter 6).
