Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the presumably cyclic vegetation succession pathway in the Arctic lowland tundra, and its interaction with local permafrost dynamics. Distinctive methods including dendrochronology, molecular tools, field observations and field experiments have been implemented to get understanding of the different stages of the vegetation succession, and therefore a complete succession cycle is depicted. The vegetation changes strongly depend on the permafrost dynamics and vice versa. Moreover, the influences of different vegetation cover types on other abiotic factors such as methane flux and soil active layer thickness are also included in the thesis.
