Resilient Adaptation to Flood Risks under Urban Growth and Climate Change Dynamics: The Case of Dhaka

Under rapid urbanization and changing climatic conditions, rigid strategies are not enough. This situation calls for the formulation of resilient strategies that are flexible and can adapt with the changing conditions of climate and urbanization.
The PhD study has identified the impacts of changing climate and urbanization on urban flooding and assessed strategies to enhance the resilience of urban areas and community for increasing flood risk. The Adaptation Tipping Point (ATP) approach has been extended and applied in combination of Adaptation Policy Pathways (APP) approach for assessment of strategies and formulation of pathways of adaptation in a developing country's context. Apart from the more technical tools (urban growth modelling and hydrodynamic modelling), various social tools like surveying, stakeholder interviews and workshops were used for this study.
Our research re-interprets tipping points by integrating social acceptability in the adaptation strategy-making and development of pathways. Inclusive governance by supporting stakeholder’s participation can thus contribute in improving the decision making process of urban areas in a development context and can also strengthen the resilience of the urban system.
