Abstract:

The presence of nano and microplastics (NMPs) in the freshwater environment has recently been reported and little is known about the effect these MPs can have on freshwater organisms. Moreover, the few studies published to date have been focused on short-term effects of MPs on single species. The aim of this thesis is to assess the threshold effects of NMPs on freshwater organisms from individual to community level at different timescales. For this purpose, as a first step, single species will be exposed to different concentrations of NMPs to obtain their dose-response relationships and to develop a Species Sensitivity Distribution (SSD), a powerful tool used in risk assessment. As a second step, in situ recolonization experiments will be performed to study long-term effects of NMPs on the benthic community. Finally, semi-field scale cosm experiments will be carried out to study the effects of NPMs and adsorbed contaminants in the food-web.
