Vanaf 15 mei zal een internationale groep wetenschappers met een Zeppelin laag over Nederland vliegen om onderzoek te doen naar de relatie tussen luchtkwaliteit en het klimaat. Een voorbeeld: van stofdeeltjes is bekend dat ze slecht zijn voor de gezondheid maar tevens dat ze een effect op het klimaat hebben; sommige koelend, andere verwarmend. Er wordt daarom gezocht naar maatregelen die een positieve uitwerking hebben op zowel de luchtkwaliteit als het klimaat. Vanuit Nederland zijn atmosferisch onderzoeker Laurens Ganzeveld en hoogleraar Luchtkwaliteit en atmosferische chemie Maarten Krol van Wageningen University bij het project betrokken, evenals onderzoekers van het KNMI, ECN, RIVM, TNO en UU.

SENSE researcher Marten Scheffer has been appointed member of the Dutch Royal Academy of Sciences (KNAW). He is one of the 14 admitted to the academy this year. Scheffer will be officially installed on 10 September.

Het nieuwe European Climate Adaptation Platform (CLIMATE-ADAPT) ondersteunt de ontwikkeling van de kennisbasis die nodig is voor het beleid op het gebied van klimaatadaptatie op Europees, (trans)nationaal, regionaal en lokaal niveau. Het platform is ontwikkeld door Alterra in opdracht van de Europese Commissie en onlangs gelanceerd in Kopenhagen bij de European Environment Agency.

Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) is a relatively new climate change mitigation option. It is widely seen as a promising win-win strategy to simultaneously deal with the global challenge of climate change and worldwide deforestation and forest degradation. From April 10-13, 2012 the REDD@WUR network of Wageningen University in collaboration with three graduate schools organised a series of events titled ‘REDD+SCIENCE+GOVERNANCE: Opportunities and Challenges’. The week focused on the theme Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+), a mechanism to create financial incentives for developing countries to conserve, sustainably use, and increase forests and hence enhance carbon stored in forests.

Plant and animal species can lose their ability to adapt as a result of climate change. This is shown by research performed by SENSE PhD candidate Marleen Cobben. Cobben used computer calculations to illustrate how the genetic base of plants and animals is seriously deteriorating due to climate change. The smaller genetic base makes species more vulnerable to problems such as diseases. Moreover, the fragmentation of landscapes and the loss of wildlife areas is accelerating this decline.
