IHE PhD symposium Nature for Water: Overcoming water challenges with sustainable solutions

We are pleased to announce the PhD symposium 2018 scheduled for 1st-2nd October, 2018 to be held at IHE Delft, Institute for Water Education. This symposium will provide a unique opportunity for PhD fellows/students to present their research to the IHE community.
The theme for the 2018 PhD symposium is “Nature for Water: Overcoming Water Challenges with Sustainable Solutions” and will run under 4 main topics. We welcome presentations which make a statement on the theme of the symposium.
With the goal of integrating the PhD community, we also welcome a certain number of presentations from external PhD students on relevant topics.

Main Session topics:

  • Water Sanitation and Ecosystems Quality: challenges and possible solutions
    This session welcomes contributions from water/ waste water treatment, resource recovery, reuse and restoration of degraded ecosystems.
  • Water, food and energy security: sustainable management and solutions
    This session welcomes presentations on urban and rural water usages, irrigation supply and network, agricultural demands and treatment.
  • Water extremes and hazards: adaptation and mitigation strategies
    This session welcomes presentations applicable for coastal, riverine and hinterland areas.
  • Bridging Science with Implementation Often we struggle with the actual implementation of research solutions
    This session welcomes contributions which detail possible bottlenecks for implementation and examples of solutions regarding communication strategies, policy, management and technical aspects.


For participation in the PhD symposium, registration and submission of an abstract are required. Abstracts will appear in the symposium handbook and they should, therefore, be prepared following the template provided in the google form. Abstracts and a short biography should be submitted for one of the 4 main topics under the symposium using the following options:

Important dates:

Deadline for submission of abstracts: 10th July, 2018
Acceptance of abstracts: 10th August, 2018

Guidelines for abstract preparation

Prepare your abstract for oral/poster presentation (300 words max) using the template provided in the form.

Oral presentation

Presenters will be expected to make a 15 minute presentation followed by 10 minutes for Q&A.

Poster presentation

Guidelines to prepare your poster have been attached within the call. The presenters are expected to give a one (1) min poster pitch during the main sessions to enlighten the audience on the relevance of their work.

Awards for best presentations and posters

The symposium committee will deliver awards for the best posters and the best presentation. Kindly note that all presentations: oral and poster, will be evaluated by a panel and the feedback will distributed to the presenters in a timely fashion. Awards will be given based on these evaluations.
