Indonesian Palm Oil Symposium: The Land Expansion - Towards Sustainable Palm Oil Production

The illegal land expansion which is caused by Palm Oil industry has become a hot issue after massive fires which occurred in Sumatera and Kalimantan (Indonesia). The expansion causes loss of biodiversity, greenhouse gasses emission, and socio-economic problem.

The Indonesian stakeholders (Indonesian governments and the palm oil companies) are working to prevent the illegal land expansion and reform the palm oil production.

The Indonesian government (on behalf of Agriculture Attache of Indonesian Embassy in Brussel) will be presenting the current condition of Palm Oil plantation in Indonesia. A representative of sustainable palm oil plantation company (Sinarmas) will also be discussing what have been done that related to prevent land expansion in order to comply RSPO.

Sakti Hutabarat as an expert of socio-economic from Wageningen University and Pita Verweij from Copernicus Institute for Sustainable Development and Innovation will be possibly presenting the impact of the illegal land expansion and the importance of forest and peatland.
