Feed the world by challenging droughts, minisymposium farewell Eddy Moors at WUR

Date: 28 June 2017
Time: 15:00 - 17:00

After more than 25 years of exciting work on water and climate change at Wageningen Environmental Research (Alterra), Eddy Moors will leave the organisation to become Rector at IHE Delft. We would like to invite you to a mini-symposium and reception to express gratitude to Eddy for his commitment to this topic and our organisation for so many years, and to celebrate this next step in his career.

In the mini-symposium Eddy will look back at a long career of research on water and climate. He will share his opinion about emerging trends and give us his vision on a possible future. Starting from the use of water by forests in the 1990ties, the changed emphasis on CO2 uptake and release of forests, towards the current day challenges concerning the execution of the Paris agreement.

Eddy will share his view on our human (in)abilities to achieve the proposed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and will zoom in on the topic of ‘water shortage’ as a key element to link climate change and a number of SDGs. With the key question: are we looking at the right options? Eddy will also share his perception of the current trend to create a business model for all public resources as seems to be increasingly the case in the Netherlands and the European Commission’s research arena.

Eddy calls for a combination of fundamental and applied research to develop actionable knowledge and practical solutions. He sees an important role for universities such as Wageningen University & Research educating a variety of young professionals with competences varying from fundamental knowledge to applied knowledge and business development.
