We are confronted on a daily basis by alarming news of the climate crisis: the vast biodiversity loss, diminishing natural resources that are vital for livelihoods of billions of people, and the rising social inequality. We are increasingly aware that the pathways to sustainability require an extraordinary effort: where will the required energy come from? How do we achieve societal, scientific, and political breakthroughs while ensuring socially fair outcomes?
On August 31, the Utrecht Young Academy hosts an online panel discussion with prof. Valérie Masson-Delmotte, Lonneke Roelofs and others on facing the climate emergency in academia. Valérie Masson-Delmotte is co-chair of the IPCC and Research Director at the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission. She will also receive her honorary doctorate from Utrecht University.
During the panel discussion, we will discuss the impact of climate change and its influence on the academic paths of the next generation scientists. We encourage you to bring along your questions and colleagues.
