The course provides an introduction to model-based data analysis in the environmental sciences. It covers model construction, sensitivity analysis, frequentist and Bayesian inference, and estimation of model prediction uncertainty. As prediction in the environmental sciences usually requires the combination of prior knowledge with measured data, there is an emphasis on Bayesian techniques.
The course is targeted at researchers who are interested in analyzing their data with mathematical models. This includes PhD students, post-doctoral researchers, and senior research scientists. The course consists of lectures, practice sessions based on didactical exercises, and discussion of problems of the participants. The participants are encouraged to bring their data sets and models to start working on their own problems during the course.
The course will be very intensive to optimize the benefit of the participants.

Location: Room T 0.07 at PBL, Bilthoven, the Netherlands
Duration:
2:00 PM to 4:30 PM
Climate is a hot topic lately: “Are the outcomes of the IPCC correct?”, “Is there a problem with the climate at all?”, “Will there ever be a climate treaty?”, and “Which solutions are allowed?”. Three leading climate scientists will address these questions and related issues in the seminar ‘Hot topics in the Climate Debate’, organized by the Dutch Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL). There will also be time to debate about these issues and to discuss how PBL should carry out their study about the errors in the work group II report of the IPCC (2007).
Date: March 8, 2010
Location: het Trippenhuis, Kloveniersburgwal 29, Amsterdam
Duration:
12:00 PM to 5:15 PM
Date: May 21, 2010
Location: Hof van Wageningen, the Netherlands
Duration:
all day.
Fisheries management is often perceived as a set of largely ecological and technological questions to determine the amount of fish that could be caught in a sustainable way and the number of fishing vessels that should be allowed on the sea.
During the symposium “The Future of Fisheries” we are presenting a number of lectures that will take a different angle on fisheries management where the focus is on developing an understanding of why fisheries management in Europe has resulted in the situation we find ourselves in and how the role of fishers and other stakeholders should change to achieve the long term sustainable exploitation that everybody is looking for.
Date: October 8, 2010
Location: Berlin, Germany
Duration:
all day.
The 2010 Berlin Conference will be the 10th conference in the well established series of European Conferences on the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change. This year’s conference will adress the “Social dimensions of environmental change and governance”.
Date: November 10, 2010
Location: Hof van Wageningen / Forum building, Wageningen, the Netherlands
Duration:
all day.
Policies have many impacts on environmental and human processes at different spatial and temporal scales. Climate change, biodiversity, energy consumption, water resource management, and food security are a few of the many examples illustrating the complex multi-scale interactions within and between environmental and human processes. This observation fits well within a long history of disappointments in policy and management related to our environment and indicates that scale sensitive governance approaches are required.
The aim of conference is to discuss different perspectives on scaling and governance issues. The starting point is that scaling and governance deserve more attention as a combination, not just in separate studies. We look at this integration as a major challenge for both the social, economic and the natural sciences. In order to get to transdisciplinarity, that is to say, cooperation between scientists from different disciplines as well as policy makers and citizens, vigorous communication between scientists from the natural science and the humanities is needed.
The conference is organized by Wageningen UR. Participants of the conference are invited to discuss integrative concepts, methodologies, and case studies related to scaling and governance issues in complex land systems. Anticipated outcomes of the conference include an international research agenda and recommendations for scale-sensitive governance approaches.
