A new study provides the first global estimates of river and coastal flooding, highlighting past and future trends, and indicates that Asia and Europe are two of the regions that are worst affected. The researchers suggest that their methods could be useful in developing a global framework for flood risk assessment.

Thinking of starting up a company in Life Sciences? Got a great idea but not sure how to commercialise it? The Venture Challenge is one of the Netherlands Genomics Initiative’s activities aimed at stimulating and supporting Life Sciences researchers in translating their inventions into viable business ideas.
NGI's Venture Challenge is a ‘must-do’ opportunity for all aspiring Life Sciences entrepreneurs. It is the way to receive coaching and advice on essential elements of setting up a business, thereby paving the way for your future success. It is also superb preparation for the next stage: acquiring financing, such as the Life Sciences Pre-Seed Grant. In two 3-day workshops, the facilitators and other ‘competing’ teams will challenge you to focus your business idea to create optimal customer value, and you will learn to pitch your business case. The team with the best venture plan and pitch is awarded €25,000. > More info...

Call for proposals 2013 for Marie Curie Career Integration Grants (CIG) was published on 18 October 2012. Career Integration Grants (CIG) support experienced researchers of any nationality, with at least 4 years’ full-time research experience or a doctoral degree. The grant is a flat-rate contribution towards research costs. These may, for example, include the salary costs of the researcher or other staff employed for the project, travel costs, consumables, patent costs and publication costs. The grant will cover a period of 2 to 4 years.
