SENSE e-NewsThe SENSE Research School publishes a regular electronic newsletter. This newsletter can also be found online at the SENSE website via www.sense.nl/newsletter/archives. You can find SENSE also on: www.youtube.com/senseresearchschoolEDITORIALThe really cold Dutch winter not yet being quite over, it is hard to imagine that within a few months the sun will warm us all once again. Still the SENSE Office is working hard on the preparations of the SENSE Summer Academy 2013, from 18-20 June. The preliminary programme includes a symposium on Sustainable Energy and Water Systems, short workshops and discussions on 18 June, and longer workshops and masterclasses on 19 and 20 June. Please take a look at the website for more details. Of course there will also be ample opportunity for meeting new SENSE colleagues and having fun, for instance during the SENSE dinner and party in the Botanical Gardens of Utrecht University. The programme not yet being final, you cannot yet register for this event, but please keep these dates in mind. In March we will finalise the programme and open registration. We will keep you updated! Contents

A new study assesses the potential impacts of climate change on human health in the Netherlands. The researchers conducted a survey, asking health experts to rate the level of uncertainty attached to different health impacts of climate change, which highlighted heat-related deaths and vector-borne diseases as particularly relevant to climate change adaptation.

Accurate and timely surface precipitation measurements are crucial for water resources management, agriculture, weather prediction, climate research, as well as ground validation of satellite-based precipitation estimates. However, the majority of the land surface of the earth lacks such data, and in many parts of the world the density of surface precipitation gauging networks is even rapidly declining. This development can potentially be counteracted by using received signal level data from the enormous number of microwave links used worldwide in commercial cellular communication networks.

As an Assistant Professor you will provide high-quality courses in human geography, planning and social/political sciences of the environment. You will be involved in the teaching programme of the Nijmegen School of Management (NSM) and, in particular, in the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes of the department of Geography, Planning and Environment (GPM). These tasks also include supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s theses. In addition, you will be expected to carry out high-quality research in the context of the programme ‘Shaping and Changing of Places and Spaces’ (SCAPES), one of the research programmes within the multidisciplinary setting of the faculty’s Research Institute for Management Research (IMR). You will also be expected to acquire funds for research projects from Dutch and European institutions. You will regularly publish articles on your research in international academic journals.
UNESCO-IHE is the largest international postgraduate water education facility in the world and is based in Delft, the Netherlands. The Institute confers fully accredited MSc degrees and PhD degrees in collaboration with partner universities in the Netherlands. Since 1957 the Institute has provided postgraduate water education to more than 14,500 water professionals from over 160 countries. The Institute has a permanent staff population of 180 of whom 90 are scientific staff and around 250 guest lecturers from academia and industry contribute to the educational programmes. Each year around 750 water professionals from all over the world attend the various educational programmes at UNESCO-IHE. The overall thrust of the Environmental Engineering and Water Technology Department is urbanization as one of the dominant global processes. Although urbanization offers enormous opportunities for socio-economic development, it also presents major challenges for the equitable and sustainable development of drinking water and sanitation infrastructure and services. Within this context the Environmental Engineering and Water Technology Department helps to build the necessary human resources and higher education and research capacities through postgraduate education, training, research and other capacity building activities in the fields of water supply, sanitation and resource recovery. The department consists of three chair groups, namely, Water Supply Engineering, Sanitary Engineering and Pollution Prevention and Resource Recovery, each headed by a professor. The department intends to recruit a Lecturer/Researcher in Water Supply Engineering (m/f) - 1.0 FTE.

The full professor (1.0 / 0.8 fte) is responsible for the scientific development of interdisciplinary research and education in the field of Green Urban Planning and Design (GUPD) in close cooperation with some current staff members of the Landscape Architecture (LAR) and Land Use Planning (LUP) groups. The chair Green Urban Planning and Design will focus on the development of new planning and design principles and concepts for dealing with the functioning of the urban metabolism, including creating sustainable spatial green and blue solutions for flows of energy, water and materials (or cycles) in the urban environment.
You will take care of the development and teaching of courses in the field of Environmental Science, Ecology and Sustainability. Your teaching program is oriented towards challenges in ecology and global change. You will also supervise students working on their Bachelor or Master thesis. You will contribute to the research program of the Environmental Science Group which centers around global change and ecosystems. Your own research theme in this field is well-matched with the research interests of the group. An important task is to contribute to the acquisition of externally funded projects. Coaching and supervising PhD students is also one of your responsibilities. You will be stimulated and coached in applying for a personal research grant.
