Kick-off SENSE Alumni network

The SENSE Research School is growing and blooming and is very interested in its former SENSE PhD students: we would like to create an active network connecting present SENSE researchers and SENSE alumni.

The network will be a medium to keep in touch and exchange information for example on, new job positions, interesting news via a regular newsletter, on oncoming events and even to organize alumni drinks or reunions. Most importantly, the network will provide access to new knowledge, expertise and exciting opportunities that arise from bringing together former and present SENSE researchers.

We are committed to make the alumni network a success. To do so, we would like to invite all our alumni to join the new SENSE alumni network and share preferences and ideas. For both purposes, we have created a short questionnaire:

Oppervlakkige afvoer van water op vlakke landbouwgronden is een complex fenomeen

19 maart 2013 promoveerde Willemijn Appels op haar onderzoek naar de oppervlakkige afvoer van water op vlakke landbouwgronden. Er is nog weinig bekend van de relaties tussen de sturende processen van oppervlakkige afvoer en de rol van het maaiveld in de afvoer van water naar het oppervlaktewater. Promotor is Sjoerd van der Zee. Co-promotor is Patrick Bogaart.

Promotor is Pavel Kabat. Co-promotoren zijn Laurens Ganzeveld en Jordi Vila.

Porpoises have to be careful in the Eastern Scheldt

The surprising conclusion of the doctoral research project on the feeding ecology of porpoises by SENSE PhD Okka Jansen is that the Eastern Scheldt may be an ecological trap. She also discovered that more than just examinations of stomach contents are required to find out what porpoises eat. The analyses of stable isotopes and fatty acids have produced astonishing new data as well as more accurate information.

LinkedIn Discussion on 11 Alternative Careers for PhD Students

It is known that academic positions are scarce and will only be available to a MINORITY of the PhD students. So isn't it a kind of weird that non-academic options are still considered 'alternative'?
Researchers coming from academia may experience skill gaps when making the transition to non-academic careers. PCDI is currently investigating what industry actually expects from a PhD. I am curious how the PhDs who already made the transition to industry experienced this. Any hurdles, skill gaps? Anything you could recommend to young scientist considering to move to industry?

Warning for predatory publisher - "Carbon Sequestration": A New Book Project

In the SENSE e-News of last January we paid attention to the phenomenon of predatory publishers (see also

Recently we hear about a mail circulating with the topic "Carbon Sequestration": A New Book Project. The mail says, among other things:
"Please note that if your chapter is accepted for publication, the payment of an Article Processing Charge (APC) will be required to cover the online and offline publishing costs."

The publisher, InTech, is listed on the Beall's list of predatory publishers.

So, if you got a similar invitation, please do not respond or accept!
