Biomass or batteries: the role of three technological innovations in the energy transition

There are high expectations for biomass and lithium based batteries as energy carriers in the mobility, energy and residential sector. This thesis shows that the explored incremental technological innovations do not contribute to the actual energy transition and with that they don’t contribute to change. Therefore, such innovations should be regarded as efficiency improvements instead of innovations that contribute to solving the challenges related to climate change and the mitigation of GHG. In addition, efficiency improvements cannot keep up with increased demand. Therefore, one should also look at realising change on the demand side instead of on the supply side alone.
By September we will present an overview of SENSE dissertations on this page, with links to the full texts of the dissertations.
