Dissertation title:

Optimising analytical methods for chlorinated paraffins to evaluate their levels in Australia

Group: Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Chemistry and Biology
Supervisors: Jacob de Boer, Pim Leonards, Jochen Mueller, Caroline Gaus

Abstract:

This thesis advanced the analytical capabilities for chlorinated paraffins (CPs) to allow, for the first time, a preliminary evaluation of their environmental and human levels in Australia. With an optimized chlorine enhanced atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry technique, short-chain (C10-13, SCCPs), medium-chain CPs (C14-17, MCCPs) and long-chain CPs (C>17) were detected in sewage sludge (low µg/g dry weight). SCCPs and MCCPs were also found in ambient air (low ng/m3) and in pooled serum samples from the general population (
