Climate Change and Development Impacts on Groundwater Resources in the Nile Delta, Egypt

The main objective of this study is to contribute to the development of a framework for long term planning of exploitation and sustainable management of groundwater resources in the Nile Delta that will include robust adaptation alternatives for salt water intrusion to groundwater. Based on updated data on groundwater salinization for scattered wells covering the delta region and knowledge of the hydrological, hydrogelogical, geological and hydrochemical characteristics of the groundwater aquifers in Nile Delta, an assessment and mapping of the existing status of groundwater resources in the study area will be carried out. The main target of this assessment is to provide detailed baseline information about the actual situation with salt water intrusion to the aquifer. A numerical groundwater model (variable density dependant model) will be developed to serve as a predictive tool for analysis and assessment of future groundwater resources development within pre-defined scenarios of sea level rise, the Nile River flows and abstractions. Proposed strategies for long term development of groundwater resources in the Nile Delta (possibly with conjunctive use of surface water) will be one of the important outputs of the research. Particular attention will be given to mitigation and adaptation alternatives for most vulnerable areas to salt water intrusion, which will also be identified within the course of this study. The research will also address uncertainties of the model predictions and incorporate them within the long term planning approach.
