Dissertation title:

Impact of forecast and projection quality on mixtures of risk management strategies

Group: Water and Climate Risk, IVM, VU University Amsterdam
Promotor: Bart van den Hurk
Co-promotor: Jeroen Aerts

Abstract:

Disaster risk management has traditionally focused mainly on either long-term disaster risk reduction measures or post-disaster emergency response. The former is informed by information on average levels of risk, the latter by the occurrence of an extreme event. In between these two, many short-term actions can be implemented that greatly reduce the impact of potential disasters. These are implemented in the period of time between a warning and the moment of the potential disaster. The research proposal focuses on how
decision-makers can select a portfolio of such disaster risk management investments based on available information about future conditions.
