Targets for environmental governance

The objective of this thesis is to contribute to both theoretical and practical knowledge of targets as important elements in the governance toolbox. The thesis explores a plurality of different targets in multiple contexts and applications within the earth system governance. Despite many relevant studies on targets in this domain, the role of targets in environmental governance is still a little explored topic. Research tends to investigate very specific applications of targets evaluating them according to different criteria. Theoretical aspects a shortly mentioned a wider picture is often missing. The thesis answer a main research questions Which function do target fulfil in the earth system governance and global environmental governance?
