This course brings together PhD candidates that have the ambition to work on environmental issues, and who have just started their journey within SENSE.
During the course, you will discuss the need for interdisciplinary research and start to think about what role you would like to play as a scientist in solving environmental issues. The course will also be part personal leadership course, exploring what is important to you, and hence what broader skills and competencies you will want to develop during your PhD trajectory. And you will meet other PhD candidates with which you will share a lot of the same experiences with.
The course work load represents 2 ECTS (meaning a total load of 56 hours) and currently takes place in an online form with one day of physical meeting. There is self study part with assignments that need to be completed before the online part starts. The self study part will be open at least a month before the online part starts. We will organize a physical meeting so you can all meet each other in person when conditions allow it.
You will need to make a poster of your project, that you can present at the physical meeting. We will inform you whether that needs to be a pdf that you can present via a beamer, or a printed full sized poster. After this course, you should be able to openly discuss your contribution to solving environmental issues; whether you will focus on fundamental science or applied science. You should understand the need for multi- and interdisciplinary networks like SENSE. This week will also provide an opportunity for getting to know other PhD students in the SENSE research school and learning about each other’s research activities and the problems that are being tackled; and hence should lead to new links within your network.
The primary goal of this week is to give PhD students insights into common issues you may encounter during their PhD trajectory; and to provide them with a framework to will help to tackle them. As such, at the end of the course you should be able to clearly formulate goals and challenges that lie ahead, and analyses potential ways how you can tackle these challenges. You will also have a better idea of the broader skills and competencies
The course consists of an introductory week in an external conference venue. During the week, special attention will be paid to three contexts:
• the multi- and interdisciplinary nature of environmental research, and the role a scientist can play
• Personal development and leadership in your PhD trajectory
• Your fellow SENSE PhD candidates as part of your network
