Communicating science to non-scientists is an integral part of scientific work. In order to be effective and establish trust and credibility, communicating science to non-scientists requires an understanding of the target group, (social) media and communication channels and how to communicate and build relationships. Being able to create impact beyond one’s research is a vital ingredient for everyones’ academic as well as non-academic career.
The aim of this training is to enable participants to effectively communicate science to audiences outside academia. The communication skill sets learned in this course will also help increase the visibility and sharpen the profile of the participating (post)doctoral researchers.
The following topics will be covered in the course:
What is the message each of us wants to get across? Who are my stakeholders? Once we identified those we develop strategies to get our message across effectively.
We discuss media and communication channels and elaborate the pros and cons and what purpose they serve best, this includes the use of social media.
In order to develop an effective impact strategy, we will look into the importance of active listening, dialogue and changing of perspectives to establish trusting relationships and avoid misunderstandings and misinterpretation of our scientific results
